Port Moresby: Papua New Guinea (PNG) has secured their place in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, becoming the 15th team to qualify for the tournament, which will be hosted in the West Indies and the USA. Notably, PNG is the sole representative from the East Asia-Pacific Qualifier.

The qualification was sealed with an impressive 100-run victory over the Philippines at Amini Park on Friday. Opting to bat first, PNG put up a formidable total of 229/6, thanks to brilliant performances from Tony Ura, captain Assad Vala, and Charles Amini, scoring 61, 59, and 53, respectively.

In response, the Philippines faced challenges in chasing the target and fell significantly short. Despite their efforts to avoid a complete collapse, they couldn’t bridge the gap.

The clean sheet from five games has put PNG at the top of the chart, and they have one more match remaining against Japan, scheduled for Saturday, although the result of that match will have no bearing on their qualification for the T20 World Cup.

With five more spots to be filled in the 20-team event, one team from the Americas Qualifier in Bermuda and two teams each from the Asia and Africa Qualifiers in Nepal and Namibia, respectively, will secure their places in the T20 World Cup.

Earlier, Ireland and Scotland had also secured a berth for themselves in the T20 World Cup next year.
