Simon Doull has questioned whether Pat Cummins will become the skipper of the Sunrisers Hyderbad and wonders how the franchise will fit him into the lineup after their successful record bid for him during the IPL Auction 2024.
Cummins made headlines with his record-breaking acquisition by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction. The fast bowler, who is also Australia’s ODI Men’s Cricket World Cup-winning captain, was snapped up for an astonishing Rs 20.50 crore after a competitive bidding war.
This price not only made him one of the most expensive players in the IPL’s history but also marked a significant moment as he briefly held the record for the highest bid ever in the league.
Although Mitchell Starc later surpassed this figure, Cummins’ signing generated immense excitement among fans and the franchise alike. Despite opting out of the 2023 season due to a heavy international workload, Cummins expressed eagerness to join the “Orange Army” and contribute to their success.
While SRH coach Daniel Vettori had hinted that there could be a change in captaincy, nothing is sure at the moment in terms of Cummins possibly becoming the new skipper. Doull, during an interaction with Star Sports, however, felt that could be the case as SRH seemed to have been the case.
Doull wonders where Cummins will start in the lineup after SRH splashed the cash on him as they have a lot of quality in the side.
“Maybe they are looking for a captain. We have joked a little bit about it. Does (Aiden) Markram play every game now? They haven’t announced their skipper. Does Pat Cummins take over that franchise? Does he come in and play a lot more instead of a (Marco) Jansen next year for them?”
“That’s going to be the question mark. Now that you have paid all this money, you have got to get him into that team. Where does he start and whose place does he take? They have got a lot of high-quality overseas talent,” said Doull.
