Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced passkey support for PlayStation accounts. With this feature, users won’t have to type in their password every time they want to log into their PlayStation accounts. This means users can simply sign in to their PS accounts through their mobile device or computer and use its screen unlocking method to log in.
For example, if users have set a PIN, fingerprint or face unlock on their phones, the same authentication system will also allow them to log into their respective PlayStation accounts. On the desktop, users will be able to link their account easily with 1Password and use its passkey capability.

How to setup passkey sign-ins for PlayStation

To set up a passkey, users have to go to the Security option under the Account Management menu. Here, users will be able to activate the option and create a passkey by following the on-screen instructions.

After setting up the option, you’ll be prompted to use your passkey whenever you need to sign in on a PlayStation 5 or a PlayStation 4 console. You can deactivate the option anytime, though, if you want to go back to signing in with a password.

How passkey sign-ins can help PlayStation users

In its official blog, the company has highlighted the benefits of using passkeys. Sony notes that using passkeys will reduce account vulnerability. The company explained that passkeys can’t be reused or given away, whether it’s inadvertently or on purpose, which makes them resistant to phishing and data breaches.
However, the company warned that some hardware security keys may cause issues. Instead, Sony has asked users to consider using passkeys that are synced on their mobile devices.
The company also advised against using mobile PIN codes as passkeys on Android. Rather, users were asked to get their passkeys from providers like iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, 1Password and Dashlane.
