Sony says it has sold 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide since its launch in 2020 despite the ‘unprecedented challenges’ during the pandemic.

Two years ago, in July 2021, the company claimed PS5 to be the “fastest-selling console” in the history of the company, with 10 million units being sold within eight months of launch. Then by December 2022, they had surpassed the 30 million mark in sales.
There has been a significant increase in the shipments of PlayStation 5 this year. Sony sold almost 40 million consoles earlier this year while tripling the shipments from January to March 2023, with 6.3 million units. Whereas, during the same period last year, it shipped only 2 million PS5 consoles.

“We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020, and the world was in a strange and different place than when we announced the console in 2019. Despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time. We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalise so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand,” wrote Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan.
Ryan notes how the company has been expressing gratitude to the community for their patience for several months as it worked through the supply chain issues. However, it seems like the problems are past the company and buyers, as PlayStation CEO notes that the PS5 console is “well-stocked,” and the demand is finally being met.
Both Digital and Disc editions received a price hike of Rs 5,000 back in November 2022, bridging up the price for the Digital Edition to Rs 44,990, and Disc Edition was set at 54,990. However, customers can grab the Disc Edition at a discount of Rs 7,500, bringing down the price to Rs 47,490, applicable till August 7.
