NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli on Sunday created history as he fired a record-equalling 49th ODI century against South Africa in Kolkata at the World Cup.
Delighting the fans at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kohli notched up the much-awaited ton to equal legendary Sachin Tendulkar‘s record of most hundreds in the format.
The ton was also special as Kohli achieved the coveted feat on his 35th birthday, giving himself a pleasant gift.
The Kohli ton helped unbeaten India amass 326 for 5 against South Africa in their 8th match of the tournament.
As Kohli went on to score an unbeaten 101 off 121 balls, the batting virtuoso also broke quite a few other records during his sensational knock.
Here’s a look at the other record that Kohli broke on his way to a record-equalling ton:
* Kohli went past the 500-run mark in a single World Cup edition for the first time.
* Kohli became the second India batter to score 3000 runs against South Africa after Sachin.
* Kohli became the second batter after Sachin to cross the 1500-run mark in World Cup history.
* Kohli now has scored 6000 ODI runs in India – second player to aggregate 6000+ runs after Sachin’s 6976 runs in India.
* Kohli notched up his record-equalling 49th ton in his 277th ODI innings. Sachin took 452 innings to register 49 ODI hundreds.
* Kohli became the third Indian batter Vinod Kambli (100*) and Sachin (134) to score a century on his birthday.
* Kohli (119) now has the second most 50-plus scores in ODI history. The batter surpassed Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara (118) in the match against South Africa. Only Sachin (145) now has more 50-plus scores than Kohli in ODIs.
* Kohli notched up his 4th century in his 34th outing at the World Cup.
* Kohli now has scored 1091 runs in his last 15 ODI innings at a staggering average of 109.10. In the previous game against Sri Lanka, Kohli notched up 100 ODI runs in a calendar year for the 8th time in his career.
