Suryakumar Yadav suffered an injury scare during the second innings of the 3rd T20I between South Africa and India at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Thursday, December 14. The India captain twisted his ankle while fielding outside the 30-yard circle as early as the 3rd over of South Africa’s chase of 202 after hitting his 4th T20I hundred that helped the visitors post a mammoth total.

Suryakumar Yadav ran from the cover region after Reeza Hendricks lofted a delivery from Mohammed Siraj over the 30-yard circle. The ball did not have the power to go the boundary and Suryakumar bent down to collect the delivery but appeared to twist his ankle while doing so.

Suryakumar winced in pain and wobbled off the pitch during the 3rd over of the South African innings. He was attended by the physios along the boundary rope. Television visuals showed Suryakumar limping as he walked off the field before he was attended by the medical team in the dugout.

The on-air commentators confirmed that Ravindra Jadeja was leading the team as stand-in captain as India were hoping to defend 202 and level the 3-match series.

Earlier in the day, Suryakumar Yadav brought up his 4th T20I hundred, the joint-most in men’s cricket. Suryakumar hit a 56-ball century in the series decider, equalling Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell’s world record.

Suryakumar Yadav and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal stitched a 112-run partnership that laid the base for India’s massive total of 201 in 20 overs in the must-win game.

India made a strong start with the ball as the likes of Mukesh Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Ravindra Jadeja picked up a wicket each in the first 7 overs. South Africa lost their big guns Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen as they slipped to 47 for 4 at the end of 7 overs.
