South Africa captain Dean Elgar has said that a three-match Test series would’ve been fantastic after his side’s loss at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town. India beat South Africa by seven wickets to level the two-match Test series 1-1.

SA vs IND, 2nd Day: Day 2 Highlights

India chased down a 79-run target on Day 2 to win the match by seven wickets, to register their first-ever Test win in Cape Town. The match saw India bowl South Africa out for 55 runs and 176 runs, while being dismissed for 153 runs in their first innings.

Speaking after the Cape Town Test, Elgar said he was proud of his performance in his farewell series, adding that a three-match Test series would’ve been fantastic. South Africa kept their unblemished Test record against India intact, having never lost a home Test series against India.

“I would have liked to do more in this game. Still very proud of my performance I had in Centurion. Nice to contribute to a winning cause. Some really tough conditions throughout. It (3-Test series) would have been fantastic,” said Elgar.

While receiving his ‘Player of the Series’ award with pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Elgar went on to joke that he’s glad that he doesn’t have to face the Indian bowling attack again. Elgar scored 201 runs in the two-match Test series and finished as the leading run-scorer.

“You want to challenge yourself, Bumrah is world-class, he deserves this award. You want to push yourself to limits. Glad that I don’t have to face these guys again. Fond memories. We’ve come a long way. Very grateful to play against these guys. A lot of good memories, I received it (green cap) in 2012, I have missed only one series. It’s got a special place. Only leaves for duty, that’s done and dusted,” Elgar added.

Following their Test series, South Africa will head to New Zealand to play a two-match Test series, starting February 4.
