Spam calls, telemarketing calls and robocalls have increased significantly and it’s hard these days to detect them. Everyone from service providers, the government to smartphone makers are trying to prevent such calls and reduce scams that happen over calls on a daily basis.
Google and Samsung also have taken a step towards it with their AI-based text-to-voice call answering feature. Samsung introduced the Bixby Text Call feature as an answer to Google’s Call Screen feature with One UI 5.0 and with One UI 6.0, it’s taking things to another level.
What’s new with Bixby Text Call
The first version of Bixby Text Call allowed users to tackle spam or robocalls using an artificial intelligence-based voice-to-text conversation feature that works during phone calls to convert text to voice and vice versa in real-time to interact with the caller. With One UI 6 beta, Samsung is taking things further by not only letting users respond to calls with random AI-generated voice, but with a custom voice-trained voice that sounds surprisingly similar to user’s own voice.
With the update, Samsung is making things more personal. Making Bixby capable of learning the voices of users and speaking the way they speak with almost similar tone, pitch and depth is a big deal and this will not only make things easier for tackling spam or robocalls but also regular friends and family calls in situations where they can’t pick the call.
The feature is currently in beta and is also available with the One UI 6.0 beta for Galaxy S23 series phones. We tried the feature and it’s a simple process. All users need to do is head to Language and voice from Settings, select Add Custom voice option and start training Bixby by reading out ten phrases prompted on the screen. Once that’s done, Bixby takes its own sweet time to analyse the voice and learn to speak in a simpler fashion.
Also, the feature is currently limited to English (United States) and it will be available if the language is set to English (US) in the settings. If it isn’t, you can manually select it to enable the feature.
