After months of playing catch-up with Microsoft’s Bing, Google is bringing generative AI capabilities to Search, the company announced at its annual developer conference, I/O 2023.
“We are reimagining all of our core products, including search,” said Sundar Pichai during the keynote.
The generative AI capabilities in Search make it easier for users to understand a topic faster, discover new viewpoints and insights, and accomplish tasks more efficiently, said the company.
When you search on Google, you’ll notice a new “Snapshot” tab at the top of the page, which is powered by AI. This summary provides links, product summaries, and images based on your search. The AI also gathers information from real users, not just websites.
If you prefer, you can use conversational mode to use natural language and narrow down your results with the help of AI.
The snapshot shows suggested next steps like asking follow-up questions and exploring more naturally with Google’s retained context and useful links.
Below the snapshot, there are regular search results with all links to all the sites across the web.
When searching for a product, users will see a snapshot of noteworthy factors to consider and products that fit the bill. They will also see product descriptions that include relevant, up-to-date reviews, ratings, prices, and product images. Google says that this new generative AI shopping experience makes it easier for users to make informed purchase decisions.
If you are looking for a new bike, Google Search might suggest asking a question about the bike’s colour options. Google Search will understand your intent and know that you are looking at specific bikes.
Google says that the new generative experience would not drive people’s attention away from the content on the web and will continue sending traffic to sites. Moreover, the search ads will continue to appear in dedicated ad slots, so the snapshot should also serve users some advertisements.
Google’s new Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment will be available in the US through Google Labs soon. You can sign up for the waiting list by clicking on the Labs icon in the Google app or Chrome desktop.
