Gujarat Titans coach Ashish Nehra has backed Shubman Gill to find success as the captain of the franchise, saying that the Indian star batter has a good head and will be given the necessary support.
Gill had a phenomenal IPL 2023 for GT as he played a pivotal role in the franchise reaching their second consecutive IPL final. The 23-year-old scored 890 runs in 17 matches for GT in the 2023 season and also bagged the Orange Cap.
Gill was elevated to the captaincy of the team after Hardik Pandya completed a trade to head back to Mumbai Indians. The Indian star had said that he was looking forward to the exciting challenge of captaining GT.
“I’m going to be captaining Gujarat Titans. That’s a very exciting challenge. And there are going to be a lot of learnings from that experience. And hopefully I can take those learnings and improve and work on myself based on those experiences and learnings. And hopefully, that is going to help me in the next year,” said Gill.
Speaking to the Times Of India, Nehra backed Gill to thrive in the role as the skipper of the side. The GT coach said that the opener has a good head on his shoulders despite being a youngster.
Nehra said that Gill would get the required support from the backroom staff and that they believed in him to be the new captain.
“IPL is a fast game and it throws challenges for everyone. We have seen how Shubman Gill has been playing for three-four years and how he has shaped up. He is 24-25, but he has a good head on his shoulders. We are there to support him. We believe in him that’s why we have made him the captain,” said Nehra.
