In the ongoing World Cup 2023 match 4th, South Africa played against Sri Lanka where they ended up winning the game by 102 runs. The proteas issued a clear statement that they are here to travel a long road. Sri Lankan bowlers completely failed to halt South Africa’s onslaught as the chokers went on to post a massive total of 428 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Earlier in the game, after being asked to bat first, South Africa lost Bavuma early in the innings, a huge 204-run stand was made by Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen. Both De Kock and Van der Dussen both notched brisk centuries before getting out. Once they were bowed out, it was Markram who started the show and ended up scoring a record-breaking 49-ball century which is the fastest in ODI World Cup history.
Klaasen and Miller provided the finishing touches to the Proteas and powered them to 428 runs after 50 overs. De Kock contributed with a 100 off 84 balls alongside Dussen who made 108 off 110 balls and Markram who collected 106 off 54 balls.
For Sri Lanka, Dilshan Madushanka managed to pick up a couple of wickets while Kasun Rajitha, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Dunith Wellalage chipped in with one each. In reply to South Africa’s huge total, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 326 runs. The Island nation lost both the openers early in the innings but then they got a flying start with Kusal Mendis only dealing with sixes and dominating the pacers. He ended up making an attacking half-century in just 25 balls and when he was batting, it looked like he would be pulling a heist. Apart from Kushal, Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka also smashed their respective half-centuries but then it was not enough to sail their team’s boat.
The simple equation of the match was Sri Lanka only managed three half-centuries in reply to South Africa’s three hundreds in the end.
