Known for iconic Bollywood films like Masoom and Mr. India, Shekhar Kapur also made a name in Hollywood with his film on Queen Victoria. On the other hand, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, most popularly known for her role in the Shah Rukh Khan film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, has returned to the entertainment industry and exploring roles. The former actress, who has now made a comeback, revealed that her former husband and filmmaker Kapur did not want her to continue with her acting career and also clarified on the poem she wrote about Preity Zinta.

A few years ago, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi had written poem where she had accused Preity Zinta of having an affair with Shekhar Kapur. The actress, in a recent interview with Siddharth Kanan, revealed that she doesn’t feel the need to forgive Preity. She said, “I don’t need to (forgive her). She is not a part of my consciousness at all. All these things do not exist for me, which is a good space to be in.”

Talking further about what went wrong with her marriage, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi recalled how Shekhar Kapur did not want his wife to continue with her acting career. She added, “My husband was very clear that he doesn’t want his wife to act. I said, ‘Okay, no big deal.’ I was too naive, too young to understand ki jab koi kisi ko bolta hai ki kaam mat karo, wo thinking kya hai (I did not understand what one’s thought process would be when they tell you to stop working). I always had more talent than ambition so I didn’t think anything would stop in my life. Though it did.”

Further, Suchitra recalled that she wanted to study further but discovered that she was pregnant. “Actually, when I got pregnant, I was leaving the marriage. I was moving to the Berklee College of Music. I got part scholarship and wanted to learn music because it was always my dream. But I discovered I was pregnant. Fate has its own way of unravelling itself and unravelling your life story. So, I stayed for a few years then I decided I can’t take this anymore.”

She went on to assert that she is not someone who would stay with someone only for status and money but would rather prefer to live a life of dignity. “I remember a lot of very posh ladies telling me, ‘You’ll be finished. Just have another baby.’ A lot of women do that. When marriage is in peril, they have a baby. But I said no. I would rather be on my own and live my own story with dignity then carry on in something that’s soul-crushing for me, that’s not serving me, just for status and image and money,” she continued.

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi tied the knot with Shekhar Kapur in 2007 and the couple’s daughter Kaveri is expected to be making her Bollywood debut soon.
