State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has been issued a purchase order (PO) to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and ITI Limited for 1 lakh 4G sites, according to a report in CNBC Awaaz. The Group of Ministers (GoM) on May 8 had approved the deployment of 1 lakh sites for the rollout of the BSNL’s 4G network by the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium.
IT giant TCS, a part of the Tata group, will supply 4G equipment for 100,000 sites for a total sum of close to Rs 24500 crore that includes network gear for about Rs 13,000 crores. The deal includes third-party items and a 10-year annual maintenance contract (AMC). ITI reportedly bagged an APO worth Rs 3,889 crores from BSNL for Reservation Quota (RQ) Order in the west zone. The company is said to carry out planning, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning, and Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) of 4G network for 23,633 sites in the west zone. As part of the contract, ITI will manufacture the Radio Access Network (RAN), the company had said in a regulatory filing.
Earlier this week, the Union Cabinet approved the third revival package for the telecom PSU worth Rs 89,047 crores which also includes the allotment of 4G/5G spectrum through equity infusion. With this spectrum allotment, BSNL will be able to provide pan-India 4G and 5G service, provide 4G coverage in rural and uncovered village under various connectivity projects, provide fixed wireless access (FWA) services, and offer services/spectrum for captive non-public network (CNPN), as per the statement.
“BSNL will utilise the locally developed telecom stack by C-DoT, in partnership with TCS, to roll out its 4G and 5G network. As many as 200 sites have already been installed and for 3-4 months, live testing of the network will be done, after which the network will be ramped up fast with installation of 100-200 sites every day,” union telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
