Huawei is reportedly giving competition to Apple’s latest-generation iPhones in China. According to a report from Counterpoint Research, Huawei Technologies has sold 1.6 million of its Mate 60 series handsets in six weeks. The high sales numbers come as the Chinese technology giant defies a smartphone slowdown to enjoy strong demand in its high-end smartphone market.
The Counterpoint report added that of those sales, more than 400,000 units were in the last two weeks, the period in which Apple launched the iPhone 15 in China. The flagship Huawei Mate 60 Pro made up almost three-quarters of the Mate series phones sold, the report said. Huawei launched its premium Mate 60 Pro phone in late August, which many analysts say uses a domestically made chip and marks a breakthrough in the face of years of US technology sanctions against the company. The smartphone is said to be on high demand, “creating the appearance of perpetual unavailability,” said Counterpoint senior analyst Ivan Lam.
The overall global smartphone market contracted by 8% to its lowest third-quarter level in a decade on subdued demand for major brands. Huawei, its former unit Honor, and Transsion Group were the only brands to record year on year growth in that period.
‘Chinese retailers offering deep discounts on iPhone 15 series’
Without providing specific figures, the report claimed that in its first 17 days, iPhone 15 sales were down 4.5% compared to that of iPhone 14 series. Chinese e-commerce platforms including PDD Holdings’ Pinduoduo and Alibaba’s Taobao are reportedly offering deep discounts on Apple’s latest iPhone 15 series, with some selling models up to 900 yuan ($123) below the retail price.
In China, Apple will occasionally allow partner vendors to offer discounts to spur demand. But Chinese e-commerce platforms have also been locked in a “value for money” battle as consumers tighten their belts amid a slowing economy, with discounting a key focus of forthcoming annual Singles Day shopping festival.
iPhone 15 sales impressive globally
Incidentally, other than China, iPhone 15 series has received very good reception from buyers. Apple is set to record highest-ever sales in several countries including India and the US for iPhone 15 sales.
