Laptop space is competitive, especially here in India. Several laptop makers already offer a wide range of options from affordable ones to gaming and premium ultrabooks with high-end specifications. In fact, several smartphone brands have also entered this space with their affordable yet high-end specifications.
Thomson, the company which is known for making affordable TVs with high-end features, is planning to enter the laptop market soon. On the upcoming launch TOI-Gadgets Now interacted with Avneet Singh Marwah CEO, SPPL Exclusive brand licensee of Thomson in India and Sebastien Crombez, Trademark licensing trade and marketing manager, Established (THOMSON France) on the upcoming laptop lineup that the company is planning to introduce in the Indian market.
Laptops aren’t new for Thomson
Thomson isn’t exactly new when it comes to laptops. The company has a history of manufacturing laptops. Marwah mentioned that “it’s not that we’re very new to laptop categories. In the 1980s and 90s, Thompson started manufacturing laptops and in France, most of the schools were using Thompson laptops”.
“Thompson knows the history; they know what kind of things had to be done in laptops. It was early 2000 when most American brands came in and because of the competition, etc they again revamped themselves in 2015 just about a couple of years back the company had around 30% laptop share in the under €300 price bracket in France”, he further added.
Thomson laptops in Indian market to borrow expertise from Thomson France
As mentioned by Marwah, Thomson already has an existing lineup of laptops in France and the laptops that are going to launch in the Indian market are likely to take lots of cues from that. Marwah mentioned, “They have done this, and they know what the segments are to follow, and, in those segments, what is the x-factor required”.
“So, in terms of laptops, the kind of expertise that we have got from our HQ which has relatively huge experience and the kind of partnership that they have done either with their chip manufacturer with their OS manufacturer, OS provider. So, all this expertise we have taken from them to create the laptop in the Indian market”, he further added.
After-sales is important and Thomson relies on its existing network
As per our conversation, Thomson is looking at laptops as an additional category in their portfolio and as sales are important, after-sale service becomes more important. Marwah said that Thomson is prepared to address this situation as well. He mentioned that “Thompson has invested in more than 19,000 pin codes. We’re doing door-to-door service. For TV, and this is not door-to-door service, you must take to a service center”. He further added, the kind of relationship that we have made in so many years with all these different products, I think that we are getting into laptops and in terms of service. So, we don’t have to create another customer care service, that’s just another category we need to add. We don’t have to appoint a lot of people we already have.”
Apart from that, Thomson is also focused on sustainability and wants to go around 90% green by the next decade. The company already focuses on recycling materials and reducing plastic waste to make the earth a greener place.
