NEW DELHI: In South Carolina‘s Republican primary, Donald Trump and Nikki Haley face off, with the former president anticipated to decisively defeat his one-time protege in her own state as he approaches securing the party’s nomination.
“Tomorrow you will cast one of the most important votes of your entire life and — honestly — we’re not very worried about tomorrow,” Trump said at an election-eve rally in the city of Rock Hill.
The candidates largely swapped only glancing blows in the early nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire in January, but the rhetorical artillery fire has intensified since the primary narrowed into a two-horse race.
In the beginning, the candidates didn’t criticize each other much in Iowa and New Hampshire. But now that the primary is between just two people, they’re attacking each other more strongly.
Haley served as a governor of the Palmetto State for six years before becoming Trump’s UN ambassador in 2017. However, Trump has the support of the party establishment and almost two-thirds of voters according to polls.
Donald Trump, trying to show he was focused on more than just Haley, promised to prove to President Joe Biden and the Democrats “that we are coming like a freight train in November,” when the general election will be held.
Polls in the southern US state opened at 7:00 am local time (1200 GMT). In the first half hour at a school near Charleston, around twelve people arrived to vote.
South Carolinians can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary without having to declare a party allegiance when they register.
