Longtime friends Twinkle Khanna and Karan Johar engaged in some lighthearted banter at the former’s book launch event in Mumbai on Wednesday evening. The playful exchange included jibes about Johar’s dedication to staying relevant by befriending people half his age.
Twinkle Khanna remembers Karan Johar calling older directors “obsolete, fossils”; pokes fun at his friendship with young actors
Khanna humorously referred to Johar as a “vampire” who “sucks out the blood” of young actors, alluding to his efforts to stay connected to the latest trends and remain a popular figure in the entertainment industry. Johar has openly admitted to his strategy of befriending young actors to maintain his relevance, but Khanna’s remarks added a touch of playful sarcasm to the topic.
During the event, Khanna recalled a conversation with Johar where he expressed his desire to avoid the fate of certain “obsolete” directors, whom he described as “fossils.” She explained, “You said you were immersing yourself among young people, which is why you love Shanaya, Anaya, Alia, and Alaya…”
Johar interjected, correcting her that he is actually friends with Ananya, not Alaya. Khanna responded with a sly grin, “You know Ananya as well.”
The actress-turned-author further added, “We had a very long conversation. We were talking about directors we can’t name, but he said that they’re obsolete, they’re fossils, he said all these awful things about them. And then he said, ‘You have to be relevant, that’s why I hang around with young people’. I said, ‘Yes, but I don’t like people, I can’t hang around with them.’”
Speaking of the event, besides Khanna and Johar, Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, Shabana Azmi and Vidya Balan, among others, were also present.
