Keacy Carty’s half-century and Matthew Forde‘s three-wicket haul played pivotal roles in this historic triumph. It was also the first home ODI series win for West Indies over England since 1998.
The West Indies cricket board shared a small video clip of the celebrations on the microblogging website ‘X’.
After receving the trophy at the presentation ceremony, WI captain Shai Hope handed over the trophy to debutant Matthew Forde. The skipper could be heard saying, “Fordey, this is for you”.
In pursuit of a re-calculated target of 188 in 34 overs, West Indies seemed to have embarked on an ideal start. Carty (50) and Alick Athanaze (45) orchestrated a promising 76-run partnership. However, the middle order faced a setback when spinner Will Jacks (3/22) took charge, claiming three crucial wickets as West Indies slipped from 78-1 to 135-6.
Amidst the team’s struggle, Romario Shepherd emerged as the savior, contributing a vital 41 runs that propelled West Indies across the finish line with 14 balls to spare. Shepherd, the all-rounder, had a stroke of luck when Liam Livingstone dropped him on 18 at the boundary rope.
The win on Saturday secured West Indies a series victory of 2-1, with a four-wicket win in the initial match and a six-wicket defeat in the second game.
Earlier, debutant Matthew Forde showcased his bowling prowess, claiming three crucial wickets — Phil Salt, Will Jacks, and Zak Crawley — to leave England struggling at 45-3. Forde’s exceptional spell set the tone for West Indies’ eventual success in the match.
