Apple rivals Google and Samsung have successfully incorporated AI in practical ways on their latest smartphone lineup, the Pixel 8 series and Galaxy S24 series, respectively. However, iPhones are still behind in the AI race and that is expected to change soon. During its latest earnings call, the Cupertino-based tech giant has confirmed that iPhone it does not intend to stay behind in the AI race with the iPhone.
At Apple’s recent quarterly earnings call yesterday, the company’s CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the company is working on generative AI features.He also notes that Apple will be talking more about these generative AI features “later this year,” which is expected to be around the release of iOS 18. The company is likely to announce the upcoming iOS 18 update at its annual developer conference WWDC 2024.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “In terms of generative AI, which, I’d guess, is your focus, we have a lot of work going on internally as I’ve alluded to before. Our MO, if you will, has always been to do work and then talk about work and not to get out in front of ourselves. And so, we’re going to hold that to this as well. But we’ve got some things that we are incredibly excited about that we’ll be talking about later this year.”Apart from this, Cook did not offer any further details on Apple’s use of AI. He also didn’t disclose which devices or platforms it will come to.
According to a report by Android Authority, the iPhone is expected to be at the center of Apple’s AI efforts. The report claims that codes in iOS 17.4 suggest that Siri will be able to use AI for summarisation, smart reply suggestions in Messages.
Apple is also likely to use AI across multiple apps like Apple Music, Pages, and Keynote. The company is even reportedly testing different AI models. Some of these models will be able to run on-device while others are expected to rely on the internet.
