One of the biggest concerns when changing phones is WhatsApp chats. iPhone users rely on iCloud to take backup of WhatsApp chats, which can be then restored on a new iPhone. The process of transferring might not bother some but storing chats on iCloud certainly does. If a feature spotted in beta version is to go by, then WhatsApp may eliminate the need for this.
According to a report by WaBetaInfo, WhatsApp recently rolled out the new chat transfer feature for beta testers on Android. Available in Beta version 2.23.9.19, the chat transfer option is available within WhatsApp Settings > Chats and it allows users to migrate their chat history to a new Android device.
The same feature has been spotted in beta version of iOS as well. The report also has a screenshot where a new option “Transfer Chats to iPhone” can be seen.
How will the feature work?
As per the report, “users need to download WhatsApp on their new phone, register with the same phone number, and use the old device to scan the QR code shown on the new phone to transfer their chat history.”
Apple, by default, gives only 5GB storage on iCloud. WhatsApp users often have many media files which are lost when they switch phones if they haven’t pumped in for extra storage on iCloud. WhatsApp’s upcoming feature could solve that problem as the reliance on iCloud for transferring of chats will be eliminated.
As of now the feature remains in beta testing and it’s not clear when WhatsApp will publicly roll out the feature.
A similar option will also be introduced on Android phones, where users have to rely on Google Drive and that to takes up storage. Google offers 15GB of free storage but that includes almost everything — Gmail, Photos, Drive among other services.
